Hello O Levels Chemistry students (as well as ICGSE, IB, IP and overseas students),

Starting today, i will be blogging intensively & consistently on Chemistry Tips & Exam Strategies based on the GCE O Levels Syllabus. I shall name this event as “O Levels Chemistry Tips Blog Marathon” and it will last for 2-3 weeks.

The aim of this event is to:

  1. Provide an additional platform for students that is under my Chemistry Ultimate Leap Programme
  2. Help other O Levels students that is preparing for their Mid-Year or Preliminary 1 Examinations

LET’S GET STARTED !!!

In an earlier blogpost, i have actually consolidated a series of blogposts that i have made on O Levels Chemistry Exam Questions & Answers, discussed since January 2009. Do check out the questions and suggested answers!

Besides that, please check also the blogposts that i have discussed in 2008 on O Levels Chemistry Exam Questions & Answers (in topical basis). Again, this contains archives (older blogposts) on questions that were discussed for the 2008 batch of students.

Pupils to study Twitter & Blogs in Primary Schools shake-up

Hello avid readers & supporters of this humble Chemistry Blog,

Besides on FACEBOOK, SimpleChemConcepts.com and Sean Chua is on TWITTER!

If you are an user of either one of them, do “Connect with me” by clicking the badges on the top-right-hand corner of this home page.

I decided to go full-steam on Twitter & Facebook after reading an education article by guardian.co.uk, that “Students to study Twitter and Blogs in primary schools shake-up”. The article wrote that New curriculum will give teachers more freedom.

As an educator, i believe it is important to make a connection to the students as well as saying the same “language”. No, it does not means that i uses high technology gadgets to coach them..in fact, i don’t even like to use powepoint to coach them (many school teachers are using that, but is that effective??). I understand from many students that they hate dislike powerpoint as the teacher just read from the slide and the tonality is monotonous.  I prefer to use “old-fashioned” “evergreen” methods such whiteboard, flip-charts and chemistry props to coach them.

Back to the article,

The draft plans will require children to master Twitter and Wikipedia and give teachers far more freedom to decide what youngsters should be concentrating on in classes.

The proposed curriculum, which would mark the biggest change to primary schooling in a decade, strips away hundreds of specifications about the scientific, geographical and historical knowledge pupils must accumulate before they are 11 to allow schools greater flexibility in what they teach.

It emphasises traditional areas of learning – including phonics, the chronology of history and mental arithmetic – but includes more modern media and web-based skills as well as a greater focus on environmental education.

More about the article can be found by CLICKING HERE.

Now, i wonder when Ministry of Education (MOE) will follow UK to draft out a plan to shake-up the educational system in a more unconventional way..(discussions last few years has always been conventional: “Scrap final year examinations for primary school students or not??).

I thought it is about time for our educational system to be introduced Web 2.0 etc…

I heard it from the rally (by government) before that they going to push on for Web 2.0 in more areas..Keep our fingers crossed.

Chemistry – Link to Art?

Chemistry Phenomenon – Linked to ART? (Image by B’Rob)

For those that have been following this chemistry blogsite for a while, you should have noticed that i have been constantly sharing:

1. Chemistry Notes Tips (yes, i do not give straight forward answers and notes..u have enough in textbooks and from your teachers….what i do? i love to point out misconceptions of many students have, so that you are aware of the pitfalls)

2. Exam Strategies (where i share general as well as Chemistry examination strategies to score the marks you truly deserve)

3. Chemistry Phenomenons (this is my LOVE..linking Chemistry abstract theories to everyday life examples)

Last December i made a blogpost on the title: “Why Am I Providing So Much Chemistry Tips, Strategies & Phenomenons” and it was published on my facebook profile.

A comment was quickly made by one of the avid reader of this chemistry blogsite and it suddenly throws a different dimension on how i should view Chemistry Phenomenons – in the form of ART!!!

Check out Leow Pei Shan’s comment:

“Totally agree with the statement that Chemistry is all around us. A pity that the current education system still does not make enough impressions and linkages to the application of chemistry in real life. Chemistry is a central science and it is a highly abstract type of hard science. For example, the periodic table of elements is a deeply abstract piece of art. There is a reason behind the placement of elements in the table. Each of them has their own history and their own unique relationship with their neighbors. Isn’t that the same when one looks at a piece of art and tries to interpret, understand the painter and its significance. Some people are hard core lovers of science (just like some are hard core lovers of fine art), some just hated it (just like some people claiming that the fine art is only for the atas). Chemistry is challenging and difficult for some, but if one can survive that painful learning process, one also gain an insight to life.”

Chemistry Phenomenon – Link to KNOWING by Nicholas Cage ?

Recently, i went to watch KNOWING, a science fiction / disaster movie starring Nicholas Cage. I always like to watch movies related to Science (particularly Chemistry) and Geography. I think they are awesome! Back to the movie – Solar flare (from the Sun) eventually strikes Earth and incinerates all life on the planet (except a few of the selected that were rescued by “aliens” and were released back after  earth were reborn.

Back to real life situations – temperature has been rising in almost all countries for the last few years. In Singapore (South-East Asia), we are living in a HOT-and-HUMID environment  365 days (yes..we only have 1 Season). The rise in temperature are greatly felt. “Is the Solar Flares nearing us???” one of my student asked me in today’s chemistry class. “Not really due to the Solar Flares” i answered (i am glad..cos life is beautiful). But the world is living in danger, due to Global Warming and temperature is rising.

Yesterday, i was at Singapore Botanical Garden with follow Master Trainer for Mathematics, Miss

Most Inspirational Video EVER – Susan Boyle (Britain’s Got Talent)

Hello everyone,

If you have not heard about “Susan Boyle” yet, i trust you will be very glad to read about this blogpost. Her video in YouTube has been viewed more than 25 millions time (that is 25,000,000 ++ times) after it has been posted just 7 days ago! A day ago when i watched it @ 1am in morning, i had “goose pimples” and my body was shivering…when i watched the 2nd and 3rd time, the effect was still electrifying! Simply Awesome!

Yesterday, i showed it to my O Levels Sec 4 Chemistry Class and i trust many have been overwhelmed by Susan’s performance and belief system. None of them were skeptical or cynical about plain-jane Susan. In fact couple of them ask me about the name of “Susan Boyle” so they can share with friends and family.

We have heard of different ways and

Penalty for using Correction Fluid or Tape in O Levels Examinations

During my times, correction fluid is a must-have in our pencil case because when we make a mistake in writing in our exercise book, we cannot just cancel it. If we do, our teacher will just return the exercise book back to us to “blanco” or “liquid” (terms we used, which means “erasing off” the error written in ink) and re-write the answers.

And as technology become more advance, Correction Tape was introduced. It is less messy than correction fluid and you do not have to wait and blow dry the correction fluid.

However, for the last few year, there is a reversal! Correction fluid has been banned discouraged from use in schools. If there is an error in writing in ink, the student is supposed to strike off the wrong answers and write in a new line / page with the correct ones.

There are pros and cons on the usage of correction fluid or tape, as follows:

PROS

  • Neat
  • Waste Use less paper, thus kill less trees (save the world =) )

CONS

  • Prone to answers being incomplete when you use correction tape or fluid
  • Ineligibility of the answers (cos fluid or tape might have smudged)

In examinations these days, correction fluid is banned from usage.

However, many students still use correction tape and fluid, especially for girls which usually like their work to be neat and tidy. They used it either at home or at tuition centres / enrichment centres.

Now, i always hear from my chemistry students that i have coached: – that there will be penalty (marks taken off) if students are found using correction fluid or tapes in national examinations and tests. They claimed that their school teachers told them so.

So out of curiosity, i tried to call up Ministry of Education (MOE) and Singapore Examinations & Assessment Board (SEAB).  While waiting for their pick up, i chance upon a press release in Feb 2009 from SEAB to The Straits Times’ editor with regards to this topic.

Based on the press release, SEAB has assured the editor that candidates are given additional writing papers if they request for them during the GCE O-Level examinations. Also, there will NOT be any penalty should candidates use corrective fluid in the national examinations.

You can view the press release at the source below:

27.02.2009 Use of Correction Fluid in O-Level Exam – Straits Times Article

I hope this clear the doubts of students and parents. It certainly cleared mine.
Got to inform my students about this. =)

PS: Hey students, posting this blogpost does not mean that i encourage you to use correction fluid or tape in examinations. This is because i have seen alot of my students that i have coached accidentally left questions unanswered because of the correction tape / fluid. This blogpost is just for your awareness.
