Chemistry Basic Essential Concepts Workshop6th & 7th Dec 2010

Two groups of students (AM and PM sessions) ranging from Sec 1 – Sec 4 (O Levels / IP /SOTA IB) were put through participative exercises and engaging activities to build up their essential concepts and skill sets such as:

  • Difference between Elements, Compounds & Mixtures
  • Understanding Atomic Structure of Atoms
  • Mastery of the Use of Periodic Table
  • Importance of Chemical Formula
  • Writing Balanced Chemical Equations

Chemistry Acids, Bases & Salts Revision Workshop8th to 10th Dec 2010

Workshop was attended by Sec 3 and 4 students from O Levels and IP schools.

Many of the students that joined this revision workshop had went for the earlier Chemistry Basic Essential Concepts Workshop on 6th and 7th Dec. You can see that they are so much more confident in writing all the chemical formula and balanced chemical equations which is so common in Acids, Bases and Salts topics. This shows that basic essential concepts and skill sets are important for Chemistry students! They must start from basic….

Comprehensive revision was achieved with lots of participation on exam-based application questions for this workshop. Coverage of key concepts include:

  • Definition, Physical & Chemical Properties of Acids
  • Definition, Physical & Chemical Properties of Alkalis
  • Strategies to Choose the Correct Method for the Preparation of Salts

Acids Bases & Salts

Now, i am looking forward to mid-January 2011 when the Sec 3 and 4 O Levels Chemistry Weekly Classes (Ultimate Leap Programme) starts for Winners Education Group, with many of the workshop participants joining up for the weekly classes.

Teacher’s Day 2010

Teacher's Day 2010 - 2

This blog post has been intended for more than a month, but i am just too busy with my graduating classes to sit down comfortably and pen type this post.

1st September is a special day for all teachers, tutors and coaches in Singapore. This is an official school holiday for MOE (Ministry of Education) teachers and celebrations are normally conducted the day before, where students usually get half a day off from school.

For me, i have no offs, no leaves, no elaborate celebrations such as dancing, singing and performance put up by students. In fact i was teaching my Sec 4 O-Levels Wednesday Revision Class from 6 – 9pm in an intensive mode, to get them prepared for upcoming GCE O-Levels Chemistry exams.

I wasn’t expecting anything but there were surprises – presents, “Happy Teacher’s Day Mr Chua!” wishes and more importantly their appreciation that i was using all my energy and knowledge to make Chemistry a more interesting subject for learning (also, coming up with strategies for them to score the marks they desire in exams).

I wish to use this blogpost to thank all of you for the wonderful wishes and lovely presents – they serve as great encouragement for me to put in even more effort and new ideas to coach you! =) I appreciate the gestures!

Teacher's Day 2010 - 1

The ‘sunflower’ is now spending quality time with potted plants outside my house…good to see it every morning. Wish all my students would be smiling like sunflower….always.

Teacher's Day 2010 - 3

Reading their thoughts was always motivational………

Teacher's Day 2010 - 4

Consumed and digested when i was working late night to answer student’s email enquiry. haha

Teacher's Day 2010 - 5

Still eating this lovely chocolate set..each actually has slight alcohol content. Wow! 1st time in my life i am tasting so many variety of alcohols…lol..not recommended for students though.

Teacher's Day 2010 - 6

Always nice to see SMILEYs…don’t you agree with me?

Last but not least, i would also like to take this opportunity thank all my teachers and lecturers that have taught me in my life. Thank you so much for imparting knowledge and life skills to me. I will not be who i am today without you!

“Hi Sean, thank you and i wish you a very happy Teacher’s Day too! Keep up the good work of supporting all of us in school by coaching the weaker ones. Your successful venture is a testimony of a job well done :-)

By: Mdm Phua, my ex-teacher that inspired me and is still an inspiration to many others at the moment. Keep teaching Mdm Phua!

Annual (2010) O Levels Chemistry June Holidays Intensive Revision Bootcamp

Hi Students (and Parents),

With GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations coming in less than 5 months time, how many of you are prepared for it?

Not sure? Take a look at your Mid-Year Examination Paper + Sec 3 End-of Year Paper + Continual Assessment Tests recently.  If you are not scoring B3 and above, it might shows that you are not that ready for ‘O’ Level Examinations.

Click HERE for Early Bird Price registration!

Some would argue that you do not have enough time to revise and memorise all the materials before you have gone for your Mid-Year Exams, and thus the not-so-good results you are getting.

But is that true??????

Now, Chemistry is a abstract subject of Science (as compared to Physics and Biology) and you need good understanding of the essential concepts in order to score. Only about 10% of the marks are awarded based on recalling of facts (i.e. memorising itself might help here), with the rest (90%) all based on your understanding and application to challenging questions.

More importantly, ALL the Chemistry Topics are inter-related and it is the norm this days that a structured chemistry question is based on 3-4 topics. As such, it is of paramount importance to have a strong foundation of essential concepts in all the chemistry topics! SORRY you cannot skip topics and expect to do well in Chemistry!

Revision-O-Level-Maths-Chemistry-Message

Every June Holidays, we have groups of students that came to our June Holidays Intensive Revision Bootcamp to master their Chemistry concepts. These students realised that June is perhaps the last chance for them to really master Chemistry – and they continue to do well for the ‘O’ Level Examinations in 5 months time

[98% of our 2009 batch scored 'A's or 'B's from 'D' - 'F' grade]

[97% of them achieved minimum 3 grades jump]

This June Holidays, i will be personally coaching you on the following key essential chemistry topics:

Mole Calculations Mastery Workshop 2010 – Successful Completion

With 1-week March School Holidays in Singapore coming to an end, we have also successfully conducted our 3 Days annual Mole Calculations Mastery Workshop 2010 during this holiday period.

Mole Calculations Mastery Workshop 2010 Class Pix

The 3 days was fun-filled with plenty of activities, participation and discussions. I am very proud to say that this current group of students that had just completed the said workshop is one of the best batch i have ever coached. They didn’t know much about Mole Calculations (some call it Mole Concepts) when we first started, but their enthusiasm and willingness to learn makes it a joy to coach them. They were so responsive and highly motivated to do well for this voted No. 1 Killer Topic in GCE ‘O’ Levels (and IP and IGCSE) Chemistry. Students were from the following secondary schools:

  • Cedar Girls’ Secondary School
  • Clementi Town Secondary School
  • Dunman Secondary School
  • Junyuan Secondary School
  • Outram Park Secondary School
  • Raffles Girl’s School
  • St. Andrew’s Secondary School
  • St. Hilda’s Secondary School
  • St. Margaret’s Secondary School
  • Tanjong Katong Girl’s School
  • Whitley Secondary School

It is wonderful to know that we have coached students from more than 80 Secondary Schools in Singapore as well as a couple of them from overseas ie, malaysia, indonesia, mauritius, etc – making a difference to their lives through our coaching.

Mole Calculations Pix 1

It is always great to know that the participants felt good excellent motivated & confident after the completion of each workshop. Here is  a few thoughts on recent Mole Calculations Mastery Workshop:

“Personally I feel this workshop has helped me a lot as before I started if I was lost in the chapter of Mole Calculations. But now after attending this workshop, it has gave me a lot of confidence to face Mole questions. I would be happy to recommend this programme to my fellow friends as I think it would help them out too!”

Jedaiah Gwee, St. Andrew’s Secondary School

“Through this programme, I have literally had tremendous improvement for Mole Calculations =) In the past, I really couldn’t get a single questions on
