shouldnt chlorine undergo disproportionation reaction under room temperature to give chloride ions and hypochlorite ions?

Indeed adding 1000 Cl "atoms" in water (H20) should not cause any reaction.

Cheers

Hi Sean.

My ans:There will not be a reaction if you place chlorine atoms into water.Rather, you must bubble chlorine gas and chloride ions will be formed.Only ions take part in reactions;not atoms.

You will have more than 1000 hydrogen atoms because not only will HCL be formed...another product will also.Right?I believe its HCLO? Since the oxygen ions are untouched.
