I love to read books, especially self-improvement books on a wide spectrum of genres such as: Psychology, Motivation, Focus Learning, Internet Marketing, Business, Marketing and Effective Communcations, etc.

Attending seminars and workshops conducted by gurus are the best way to absorbed and learn the skills, since the learning curve will be shorten. My mentors come from different background and they include Anthony Robbins, Dr. John Gray, Joe Girard, Jay Conrad Levinson and most importly T. Harv Eker.

However, it is not cheap to attend such seminars and thus the next best method i used to learn the necessary skills are through books. And library is definitely the best way that i can get hold of good books. I will normally borrow the books from the library to read, and when i find them useful, proceed to buy them at major bookstores such as Borders, Kinokuniya, Page One and MPH. For books that i can’t find locally, i will ship it from Amazon US.

Now, let’s get back to the preview of the CCK Library. There are a total of 9 participants and we are either bloggers or avid fans of the library. The preview tour was conducted by friendly librarian Phuay Lin and made possible by Ivan Chew.

“New Arrivals” Section - once you enter the new library..act fast to grab new books

Activity Room - place where we had the brief introduction by Phuay Lin on the history of CCK Library, and a future venue where activites such as workshops, programmes and other events to be held.

There are 10 NOs in the Library! Interesting huh?! These are the 1st 4 NOs that need to be observed in the Library.

The other 4 NOs in the Library. Hmm. So that will leave us with 2 more NOs that we should observe in the Library. Anyone know what’s that? Drop me a comment if you know about it. =)

1st section of the Library. The new library has been renovated to cover 2,400 sq m which is about 40% larger than the previous one, and contains about 200,000 books at the moment.

Vibrancy at the Childrens Section - Look at the colourful chairs and tables, as well as the electrifying carpets. I LOVE those carpets..made the “old boring library” into such wonderful place!

Chair is made of plastic.  You guys still remember what we have discussed on the advantages and disadvantages of Plastics over conventional materials such as Wood and/or Metals? Leave me a comments on your thoughts. Part of chemistry phenomenons that i mentioned before. Chemistry is EVERYWHERE around us…yes, in this case, in our libraries.

Newspaper reading area. Total of 10 newspapers titles will be made available. Good news for those that would like to know current situations in the world. What a nice view!

“Storytelling Area” - a place where authors, librarians and volunteering groups will read to children. Open Concept in order to attract even the shy and quiet children - which normally will not go into a room to listen to stories.

“Talk Zone Room” - a 1st time Trial in libraries..where users can listen and talk on their mobile phones. Wow..i would love this one.

Back to Chemistry Phenomenons! These bookshelves are made up of metals, unlike the conventional wood shelvings that we always see. Now Students, question to you - Is the shelve made of Cast Iron, Mild Steel or Stainless Steel in this application? Why? (CLUE: Library is fully air-conditioned and thus very high humidity) PS: Leave me a comment.

Notive board for Teen Authors to leave articles. Hey students, i have also written a Chemistry Guidebook “Up Your Chemistry Grades Now!” & looking to finish up my second Chemistry Book on “Secrets of Mole Calculations”. You can also write a book if you want. Just write on something that you are passionate about.

Never fail to borrow a book whenever i go to the library. This is the book that i borrowed at the end of the preview.

You are ready to begin deliberately creating and receiving more of what you really want in your life, starting with your academic pursuits in Chemistry.

Recently, a parent called up and asked told me that her daughter has signed up for a 8 days intensive revision program at a tuition centre in the west side of Singapore, but her daughter pulled out after just attended only 3 sessions, even thought they have paid the full sum already. After analysis with her, i realised that there are 2 possible reasons:

1) Daughter has not studied Mole Calculations before in school, but the tuition centre go straight into depth of Mole Calculations, neglecting all the basics.

2) Daughter is not mentally ready to learn something that is new to her (while the peers in the class has gone through the topic before)

It will be either or both of the above reasons - but what i want to emphasize is that in coaching, MOTIVATION is a big big thing. It is in fact crucial for the student to feel motivated to achieve academic grades that she desire - since she will have the energy and focus to work towards it.

About a week ago, i was washing my plates after dinner when i accidentally chance upon some products that are made using Melamine. In fact, the words “MELAMINE” are printed on the underside of the plates.

What can beat learning Chemistry then actual observations of real life examples?

And that is always our approach of inculcating a ”questioning mind” on chemistry phenomenons.

Today i am going to share with you on an email that i have received from a buddy of mine, on how ATTITUDES is so important for us to score academically in exams, and not just Chemistry alone.

This equation should be taught in all Math classes! (maybe we can ask Ai Ling from www.singaporeolevelmaths.com)

From a strictly mathematical viewpoint it goes like this:

What Makes 100%? What does it mean to give MORE than 100%? Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been to those meetings where someone wants you to give over 100%. Your parents, Your teachers, Your tutors? Many tried but only acheive 90 plus %. So what makes up 100% ! in life?

Here’s a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these questions:

If:
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z is represented as:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26.

Then:

H-A-R-D-W-O-R-K
8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98% !

and

K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E
11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96%

But,

A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E
1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100%

So, one can conclude with mathematical certainty that While Hard work and Knowledge will get you close, and Attitude will get you there!

Based on my observations for the last 10 years (in fact 20 years since i went through it also), these are the

Possible reasons for students not doing well for Chemistry Exams:

1. Doing many worksheets without Reviews

“Done” too many worksheets, ten years series questions and top school preliminary questions without knowing why and what they are doing. When they have a question answered wrongly, they did not review and reflect what are the concepts involved to get the question correct, if it ever comes out again (but rephrased in a slightly different way). So they just do for the sake of doing. To put into analogy - say you borrowing books on a certain topic to read and improve your knowledge, Do you think you will gain and learn alot from that topic if you read 20 books quickly in a week. Or do you think you will gain more by reading just 5 books in that week, but devouring the meaning and tips of what the 5 books have to offer? Isn’t this clear enough? Learning is still learning, be it academic results or self-improvement in certain skills.

2. Weak Foundations in Chemistry Essential Concepts

Foundations for Chemistry Basic Essential Concepts are not build properly. Students merely “sit in” many tuition classes to have the “feel good/safe” or “yeah, i am attending tuition classes”, but in fact, they are not learning much as they simply do worksheets at those centres. Nothing much has been done to build up their foundations. Just because the students are attending tuition classes DOES NOT mean that they will simply do well. It is not a guarantee thing. Progress need to be tracked by the parents as well as the coach. And if you think your child is not improving, you need to check with the coach on method of coaching being used. It might not suit your child at all.

3. Seek help Too Late

Students (and to be frank, parents also) only seek help when the exams are nearing. I will not say this is too late to revise intensively and still get good grades for chemistry (since we have produced numerous “miracles” over the years. Many good coaches in the market had also done so brilliantly). But what if your child has Chemistry, Physics, A-Math and E-Math are below passing standards, and now they seek Intensive Revision Programs for all the subjects? You must agree with me that the child will feel burn-out and so stressful that he might have mental blocks in actual exams.

4. Wrong Attitudes in Learning

And most importanly, it must be ATTITUDES of the students. Put it these way, when i am in my teenage years, i also play alot - soccer, basketball, chatting with friends, etc. As teenagers, it is in-built in them to enjoy themselves. Many tutors and teachers forget about what many motivational gurus mentioned before: “WORK HARD, PLAY HARD”!! Yes. In order for these students to do well in their academic results - we need to support them to PLAY HARD, but at the same time, instill in them the mindset of WORKING HARD too. In our training, we always start with building up their ATTITUDES towards learning (incorporated into part of our Accelerated Learning Techniques)..and i can tell you..this is a lifelong skills and mindset that will last them forever…You need to empower the child to want to get better grades themselves..cos times have changed, you cannot force your child to do things they don’t want. Period.

Many parents are trying to find help this holiday to pull up their child’s chemistry grades. The most important thing thing is to Revise through their Essential Basic Concepts. In fact, we will be conducting Chemistry Essential Concepts Revision Workshop in Singapore during the Dec holidays. Purpose is to get the students to start revising their key concepts and build up that momentum.

How To Revise for O-Level Chemistry and Improve Your Grades:

The O Level Chemistry Examinations does not only tests you on the chemical facts and definitions that you can remembered (contrary to the thoughts by many students that they have to memorise the whole textbook), but also largely test you on the application of your knowledge and problem solving. In fact, only about 15% of the marks are allocated for Recall of Facts, the rest are for Understanding Concepts & Applications.

These are the Skills and Knowledge required to do well in Chemistry:

• Know the chemical definitions, units, symbols and chemical formulae in the syllabus
• Know the facts such as uses of petroleum fractions and the rust protection methods, etc
• Good grasp of Chemistry Concepts such as the Reactivity Series of Metals and how to apply them such as Extraction of Metals
• A good understanding of using the Flow Charts for questions on Qualitative Analysis
• Ability to interpret and sketch graphs, such as Rate of Reactions
• Observations on any chemical reactions
• Solving problems, largely from Mole Calculations (voted # 1 killer in Chemistry)
• A good understanding of the Social, Economic & Environmental aspects of Chemistry-related phenomenons and activities, such as Atmospheric Pollutants and Its Effect on Humans
