well i am just a student like you but i gues i can answer this thing

the functional group in organic chemistry gives us the initiation point to start reading a formula of a compound........ it is different with different homologous series.....

for alkanes we get that the functional group is usually the alkyl group that has priority over others so we start reading the formula from the nearest point to the functional group......

when we talk about the unsaturated hydrocarbons we mean to indicating those that have a double or triple bond between their carbon atoms ......

in these hydrocarbons the bond referring the compound as unsaturated has priority over all other functional groups.......

similar is the case with the functional group of alcohols and carboxylic acids ...

in short trying to come to the point you raised, the functional group in hydrocarbons is the part which depicts its difference from other hydrocarbons....SIGNIFICANTLY...... :)

i hope i didn't humiliate you .... :)
