O Level Chemistry – Periodic Table Mini Series (Part II)

Yesterday i mentioned why it is important to understand the topic on Periodic Table well, in order to score well for GCE O Level Chemistry Examination. I have also posted 2 exam-based questions on Features & Trends in the Periodic Table.

In the next few days, i am gog to blogpost on?Periodic Table Mini Series by sharing Chemistry Tips & Strategies with discussions on exam-based questions.

For now, let us look into the

Features?of the Periodic Table:

  • Elements in the Periodic Table are arranged in order of increasing proton number.

Period:

  • 7 Horizontal Rows of elements, numbered 1 to 7
  • Each element in a period has a proton number which is 1 < the element after it
  • As we move from LEFT –> RIGHT of the Periodic Table
=> Metallic character of the elements ?
    => Non-metallic character ?
  • Elements in the same period contains same number of electron shells

Group:

  • 8 Vertical columns of elements in the Periodic Table, numbered I to VIII (or 0)
  • Elements in the same group
=> Same number of valence electrons
    => Similar chemical properties

Hope you are already learning something. Now is your time to participate in order to accelerate your learning.

Question 1:
Which statement about the Periodic Table is false?
a. Elements get more metallic on descending a group
b. Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons
c. From left to right across a period, there is a change from non-metallic to metallic
d. Elements are arranged in order of increasing proton number

Question 2:
In the Periodic Table, how many periods include the elements of atomic numbers 1-18?
a. 2
b. 3
c. 6
d. 8

    the answers are
    i) C
Since I.P is increases from left to right so left to right metallic character decreases.
    ii) B
Hydrogen is the 1st element in the periodic table and it belongs to the 1st period while Ar’s atomic number is 18 and it is the last element of 3rd period that’s why answer is B.

can a hydrogen displace another hydrogen in a compound.

Hydrogen is a Non-Metal. It is placed inside the Metals Reactivity Series to differentiate the more reactive common metals from the less (or non) reactive common metals.

Essentially, you need to know that metals above Hydrogen in the Metals Reactivity Series will react with dilute acid to produce a salt and hydrogen gas. Those below will not react with dilute acid to give hydrogen gas and salt.

    Hope this helps.

do you think that hydrogen is a metal. Though it is more reactive than cu , au , pt , ag , hg. it doesn’t show any metalic properties also.

    Hi Kwee,

I simply love the way you explained it.. It only shows that you have a good grasp on the chapter of “Periodic Table & Group Trends”.

Way to go! Keep it up!

    Reasons:

    1. The elements on the left are alkali metals but those on the right are non-metals. C is false, so it is the answer.

    2. atomic numbers 1-2 are on the 1st period; 3-10 (2,1 – 2,8) on the 2nd period; 11-18 (2,8,1 – 2,8,8) on period 3. Hence there are 3 periods which include 1-18, B is the answer.
