For Singapore students taking the O Level Chemistry Examination, your Paper 2 (Written Exam on Chemistry Theory) will be in 14 days time. For the next 2 weeks, i will be sharing with you on specific tips and strategies on how to Revise for your O Level Chemistry Exam and Score your As!
The O Level Chemistry Examination not only tests the number of chemical facts and definitions you have remembered, but also if you know how to apply the chemistry concepts and solve application problems.
About 30% of the marks are given for recall of facts and definitions, the rest are for understanding and applications of chemistry concepts.
Following are?Skills required to?DO WELL?in O Level Chemistry Exam:
- Knowledge of DEFINITIONS, CHEMICAL FORMULAE, UNITS & SYMBOLS
- Knowledge of CHEMISTRY CONCEPTS such as Reactivity Series of Metals & Its Applications
- Knowledge of FACTS such as Uses of Petroleum Fractions
- Knowledge of OBSERVATIONS that occurs in many experiments
- Ability to use FLOW-CHARTS to solve questions related to Qualitative Analysis
- Ability to SKETCH, PLOT and INTERPRET graphs and diagrams
- Knowledge of the SOCIAL, ECONOMIC and ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS of Chemistry such as effects of pollutions
- Ability to use CHEMICAL CALCUALTIONS to solve problems related to Mole Concepts and Chemical Reactions
As you can see, a large part of the marks will come from Definitions and essential Chemistry Concepts. You will?DO WELL if you know all the above points..
But if you are looking for a QUICK FIX to get you the As that you truly deserve, then you would need to know exactly what the examiners are asking you so that you know how to answer accordingly to score FULL MARKS.
I am currently busy writing the finishing touches to a new book called “Up Your Chemistry Grades Now!”.
How do you like the idea of scoring the marks you truly deserve by knowing what examiners are looking out for? Yes! It is exactly what this book is for.
For now, I would like to invite you (especially the graduating students)?to take a peep at some of the main highlights of the book which include:
– Gloosary of terms & KEY DEFINITIONS you?need to know
– Examination tips and strategies
– Common Errors Made by Most Students and How to Avoid them
– Tips and Strategies of studying for killer topics

Where can I get the book called “UP your chemistry grades now!”?
Hi Sharf,
Indeed i do not know what will be coming out for this year O Level Chemistry Exams. This is partly because i do encourage my students (and my readers) to spot questions to study in Chemistry.
And the more important reason is that 70% of questions for Chemistry are based on Application of Chemistry Concepts, and we see in recent years, there are more questions in Paper 2 which combines many chapters in each question.
Spotting of questions would be dangerous, just like playing with fire.
Since you have done your Ten Tears Series, i would assume that you have revised through all the chapters already and just looking for specific tips to score better in O Level Chemistry Exams.
Do note that “Practice Papers” (i suppose you mean Top School Past Years Prelim Papers) are usually much tougher than O Level Chem Paper. This is because Prelims Papers are generally catered to the school itself.. i.e. some of the questions are not directly related to the O Level Chemistry Syllabus content, but school can set it because they have taught it to their students in school during normal days.
Having said all the above, i would like to share with you the topics that you should play more focus on due to their high weightage in Marks as well as high occurence for past 7 years of O Levels Exams. They are:
1) Metals & Reactivity
2) Organic Chemistry
3) Bonding & Structural Properties
4) Acids, Bases & Preparation of Salts
5) Electrolysis (for Pure Chemistry students)
Hope this information helps.
Wish you the Best in your Academic Success in Chemistry,
Sean =)
PS: Do note that above information is based on my analysis of past 7 years O Level Chemistry Exams. It is NOT a Tip on Spotting Questions for this year’s papers.
PPS: If you tends to have (1) Misconceptions in Chemistry Concepts or (2) Need To Know Confidently what are ALL the Chemistry Definitions that you MUST know, you can refer to the book that i have just written.
Hello, I just have a question to ask, is there a simple way to know better
what is going to come out for Chemistry Os? I have finished the TYS, but I still
feel like Im not given an insight of what is going to come out. I know nobody knows
until we have sat for it ourselves but if its possible, but if there is a way to narrow it
down, please tell me. I feel that even though ive done the TYS, when I do practice
papers, im still unable to answer some questions.
SO, please if there is a way to help me remember easily, please do tell me,
because im forgetful and in an exam like this i do not wish for that to happen.
Thank you.
