This post is about 2 students from Gan Eng Seng Sec that emerge victorious from hardships to being Top Students. Despite having to struggle, Mr SY Teo and Miss Hairul H didn’t give up. She worked part-time to support herself though her GCE O levels whilst he spent long hours studying to retain his scholarship and prevent any additional burden to his family.
Now she is the top student (scored 5 A1s and 1 A2) in the Normal Stream and he in the Express Stream (7 A1s and 1 A2) at Gan Eng Seng Secondary, Singapore. Money woes did not stop them from scoring their As. Teachers were all praises for the two young achievers.
For her, she tutored lower primary students in maths and Chinese, earning about S$80 a month, and worked at fast-food outlets on weekends. She would used her tuition earnings for her expenses and saved up the money from weekend jobs. She had time to study only in school and late at night. All this requires her to pay attention in class and having the motivation and endurance to stay up late at night to do homework and revision.
As for him, he skipped his Hari Raya celebrations (aka Muslim New Year) at a relative’s place and studied at home instead. He studied hard in order to retain his scholarship. For this young man, it does not require encouragement from his mum. He is driven to succeed.
Teachers played their part too in their victory and both students are grateful to their teachers for their support and concern. Hairul wish is to become a neuro-surgeon whilst Shui Yu want to become a psychologist and help people to face their struggles.
The two of them shows lots of inspiration for others to note and follow that with focus on the goal that you have set out to achieve. Nothing is Impossible, Nothing is going to stop them!
