O Level Chemistry – Chemical Definition of BASEs

In the previous posts, we have discussed on ACIDs in terms of their definitions and properties. Today we will continue by looking into the Chemical Definitions of BASEs in ‘O’ Level Chemistry.

A BASE is a substance that reacts with an ACID to form a SALT & WATER only.
Bases are Hydroxides (OH-) or Oxides (O2-) of metals including ammonium hydroxide.

Acid + Base –> Salt + Water (Neutralization Reaction)

E.g. CuO(s) + H2O(aq) –> CuSO4(aq) + H2O(l)

E.g. Mg(OH)2(s) + 2HNO3(aq) –> MgNO3(aq) + H2O(l)

Let’s try out an exam-based questions to see how much you understand.

Quick Check 1:
Consider the following reactions which involve reacting lead(II)oxide (PbO) and lead(IV)oxide (PbO2) with acids:

A. PbO(s) + 2HNO3(aq) –> Pb(NO3)2(aq) + H2O (l)
B. PbO2(s) + 2HCl(aq) –> PbCl2(s) + 2H2O(l) + Cl2(g)

Which of the above reactions is NOT a Neutralization reaction?

The answer must be A because when an acid reacts with a base it forms a salt and water only.

netrztion reaction always is defined as being in the domain of the given equation. Acid+Alkali—>Salt +Water hence deduced that option no.2 is incorrect.

i think the answer is B. because with neutralization reaction a base reacts with a acid to form water and a salt.
